TOP ACADEMIC COACHES AND TUTORS FOR WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

ACS is here to help the Raiders right here, right now, this semester! We provide the top academic coaches and tutors for Wright State University students.

Tutoring services can help students with a particular subject or challenging concept. Students will seek out a tutor when they identify an issue or challenge in a particular class or subject. The tutor meets with the student, initially gaining an understanding of what the problem or misunderstanding is. They then explain the concept, formula, method, etc. in a different way than the professor, identifying where the student is stuck or making mistakes. Next, the tutor provides correction and guidance to get the student to be able to work through material independently and arrive at correct answers or comprehension of subject or assignment.

On the other hand, academic coaching can cover all areas of academics, including things like time management and study strategies. Academic coaching introduces learning tools and strategies that create effective habits, leading to increased success in the classroom and beyond. These are not mutually exclusive, and can be used together to create a strong support system for your student.

Have you considered an academic coach?  Here’s how it works…

An experienced educator will work with the student on a weekly basis, introducing new learning tools and strategies that create effective habits, leading to increased success in the classroom and beyond.  Student and coach will meet either in-person or remotely, at a mutually agreed upon time to review each week’s materials. The student will be required to do some outside reading or assignment between each session as assigned by the coach. Working together, they build a relationship that provides mentorship and guidance. This enables the student to move toward becoming more independent in their learning.

What is Academic Coaching?

The very definition of a coach is someone whose job is to teach or train.  One of their goals is to get a “win” or a “winning season”. An academic or educational coach is in line with that model. Academic coaching provides one-on-one support for students, that is geared towards developing critical academic and life skills, while building self-confidence and defining motivation. This sets the student up to not only “win” the semester, but all that lies ahead for them-in college and in life.

Every successful person in sports, entertainment, politics or business has relied on some form of a coaching at some point.  Top athletes use coaches to help them develop the physical, mental and technical abilities needed to outperform their competitors.  Famous singers lean on voice coaches to improve their pitch, range and clarity.  Successful business professionals utilize executive coaches to strengthen their leadership and productivity skills. Academic coaching will give your Wright State student the advantage to “win” at college, each and every semester.

  • Our process involves closely matching students with a mentor who will offer guidance, encouragement, and accountability.
  • Students meet weekly with their coach and review key concepts that are key to their success in college.
  • Our coaches are passionate, lifelong educators who are highly skilled at helping students work through their emotions while tackling the challenges that can act as a barrier to their academic success.

Which Option is Right for my Wright State Student?

At Wright State University, we work with high-achieving students, average students and students who just need extra support. Whatever level your student is at is the right place for them to start! Working with an academic coach can address and strengthen areas of concern, while also honing their already successful skills.

If your student is achieving in all areas but one, tutoring in that subject may be our recommendation.

However, for students who struggle in several areas, or who have identified time management and/or procrastination issues, academic coaching is strongly suggested.

NEARLY 1/3 OF COLLEGE FRESHMEN DROP OUT BEFORE THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR

IS ACADEMIC COACHING RIGHT FOR YOUR STUDENT?

College Freshmen

Freshmen starting or continuing their first year are our most common clients. We find that the best approach to academic coaching is a proactive one. Starting from the top, we work with students on what they already know from high school and build on those skills to create an even better college champion. Wright State students who start their freshman year with academic coaching find they are much more prepared and ahead of their peers. They are also less stressed and find they have more free time to enjoy non-academic activities.

Academic Probation

Academic probation can be a serious and stress-inducing status. Wright State students who find themselves on academic probation can take part in our Academic 911 program. Coaches will identify any individual problems, making any necessary referrals for tutoring or other campus resources as appropriate.  This academic coaching program is designed to first address the immediate problems in order to get the student back in good standing. Further, students will also learn how to avoid potential issues in the future and break any bad habits of the past.

Online or Remote Learning

Online courses can be a challenge to some students. Academic Coaching Specialists can help WSU students remain focused and engaged in these types of courses. We have found that material is not typically the problem. Rather, the ability to see things laid out and in order, along with some incremental goals and motivation are usually all that is required to see vast improvements.  Providing accountability and a step-by-step plan, ACS coaches are there each week to assist students taking any online course.

Student Athletes

Athletes who are struggling with eligibility issues are another group our coaches frequently work with. Academic Coaching Specialists are familiar with NCAA guidelines and can help your Wright State University student monitor their standing and progress toward degree (PTD). Working with an academic coach throughout their athletic career can ensure they will not miss out due to issues related to academic eligibility.
