TOP ACADEMIC COACHES AND TUTORS FOR UCLA STUDENTS
Did you know UCLA students can have a “personal trainer” for their academic experience?
Academic Coaching Specialists provides the top academic coaches and tutors for UCLA students. Sometimes, students just need help with one particular concept or subject. However, it is often the case that there are other areas of support that can vastly improve performance across subjects. These may include study strategies, note taking methods and test taking techniques, time management and organization, or follow through and accountability on assignments. An academic coach can help with the entire college experience! A personal coach can ensure your UCLA student will not get lost in the crowd.
Tutoring and coaching are not mutually exclusive and can be used together to create a strong support system for your student. UCLA students will learn how to master time management and reduce their stress. Coaches will introduce new learning tools and strategies that create effective habits and boost their confidence, leading to increased success in the classroom and beyond.
What is Academic Coaching and How Does it Work?
The very definition of a coach is someone whose job is to teach or train. Acting coaches, voice coaches, athletic coaches, or business coaches; every successful person in sports, entertainment, politics or business has likely relied on some form of a coach at some point in their career. Academic coaching provides one-on-one support for students, geared towards developing critical academic skills that will raise the bar for their grades, motivation, and overall confidence!
An experienced educator will work with the student on a weekly basis. The student will be required to do some outside reading or assignment between each session as assigned by the coach. Student and coach will meet to review each week’s materials. The relationship is meant to be that of a mentorship, where the coach motivates and encourages the student as they move together through the semester.
Working one-on-one with a coach will provide the necessary support for students to:
- learn the steps and strategies to properly prepare for exams and write papers
- learn time good management skills
- find a healthy balance between social and academic life on campus
- understand how to study and take effective notes for each class type
- overcome stagnation by focusing on goals and success
- quickly bounce back from setbacks

IS ACADEMIC COACHING RIGHT FOR YOUR STUDENT?
ACS coaches will not only help your UCLA student achieve their GPA goals, they will also keep them focused, inspired, and supported throughout the journey.
At the University of California-Los Angeles, we work with high-achieving students, average students and students who just need extra support. Whatever level your student is at is the right place for them to start! Working with an academic coach can address and strengthen areas of concern, while also sharpening their already successful skills. Here are a few groups we most commonly work with:
Athletes who are struggling with eligibility issues are a large group our coaches frequently work with. Academic Coaching Specialists are familiar with NCAA guidelines and can help your UCLA Bruin monitor their standing and progress toward degree (PTD). Working with an academic coach throughout their athletic career can ensure they will not miss out due to issues related to academic eligibility.
We find that the best approach to academic coaching is a proactive one. Freshmen starting or continuing their first year are our most common clients. Starting from the top, we work with students on what they already know from high school and build on those skills to create an even better college champion. UCLA students who start their freshman year with academic coaching find they are much more prepared and ahead of their peers. They are also less stressed and discover more free time to enjoy non-academic activities.
Students Taking Online Courses
Online courses can be a challenge. Academic Coaching Specialists can help students remain focused and engaged in these classes. Providing accountability and a step-by-step plan, Academic Coaches are there each week to assist students taking any online course. Tutoring is not always the best solution for these types of courses, as the content is not typically the problem. Rather, the ability to see things laid out and in order, along with some incremental goals and motivation are usually all that is required to see big improvements. Of course, tutoring can be used in tandem with coaching for maximum results.
Students on Academic Probation
ACS is here to help UCLA students on academic probation. Through our Academic 911 program, we address the immediate problems in order to get the student back in good standing. Further, students will learn how to avoid potential issues in the future and break any bad habits of the past. Coaches will identify any individual problems, making any necessary referrals for tutoring or other campus resources as appropriate. ACS is a partner in helping the student get back to where they need to be.
