How an Academic Coach Can Help Improve Your Student’s Performance in Elyria, OH

Academic Coaches are similar to tutors, but instead of focusing on one subject, they help students with skills that can apply across their curriculum. Here’s how an academic coach can help improve your students’ performance in Elyria, OH:

Help build their confidence

One sure fire way to get students to raise grades is to start showing them what success feels like. Once their coach ignites that enthusiasm, the student begins to naturally work harder as they discover what they need to do.

Give them better study skills

Test prep is easy in K-8. The teachers review in class with games and study sheets. They are told, almost directly, what would be on the test. The students can pay attention in class and almost memorize the answers. This makes recall relatively easy because they have seen the material before, in almost the same format. In high school and college, this suddenly shifts, and students are expected to know how to study for tests where information looks different than how it was presented in class. They may also be expected to read outside material on their own and incorporate that into their understanding of a topic. This creates a gap that many students fall into, producing much lower grades than they have been used to seeing. Academic Coaches will teach these skills directly, thus empowering them to do well both now, and in the future!

Keep them focused

The competition for students’ attention is fierce. Between social activities (both real and virtual), sports, other lessons and activities, actual schoolwork can often take a back seat to the more engaging things they are involved in. A coach will be there each week to make sure they are prioritizing things appropriately, as well as helping them to break larger assignments and projects up into manageable pieces that they can work on together over time.

3 Questions to Ask when looking for a tutor for your teen

If you are looking for a tutor for your teen, be sure to ask a lot of questions. Even though tutors are abundant, they are not all equal. Here are 3 questions to ask when you are looking to hire a tutor for your teenager this year:

1. How long have you been a tutor?

This is an important question, as you are looking to establish some experience. New tutors can be great, and have to start somewhere, but if your student has been struggling with a subject for some time, you really want someone who has been doing this for a few years. They should have the resources to pull from and will likely have experienced getting other students through similar challenges.

2. What are your favorite kind of students to work with?

Here you are looking to see if they enjoy a challenge or prefer working with students who only need a little help. This can be used to determine if they would work well with your student or not.

3. How would you work with my son/daughter to help them …?

Lastly, you want to see how they will approach the specific thing you are looking for help with. For example, if they simply cannot get fractions or seem to have a block when it comes to writing a paper, ask about these things directly. They should be able to take you through a step-by-step process that they feel would help your son or daughter reach an understanding.
