6 questions to ask when you’re hiring an academic coach

Academic Coaching can offer the support your son or daughter needs this year. But there are certain things you want to find out before engaging in an arrangement. Here are a few items you will want to make sure align with what you are looking for:

1. How long is the arrangement?

Make sure to steer clear of anyone who tells you they can improve grades in just a few sessions. Changing habits and deep learning takes time. Services will range in length, but the minimum should be about 8-10 weeks, to ensure enough time for your student to make progress that will last.

2. How long have you been teaching, and what type of students do you enjoy most?

This 2-part question is of course, looking to see how experienced the coach is and will reveal if they truly enjoy helping students overcome challenges to become successful. You will likely want to avoid brand new teachers because even though they are energetic, they can lack the experience to know how to help students in difficult situations, or they may not have the resources available that a more seasoned colleague may. On the opposite end, teachers who are too far removed from the classroom can be hard for students to relate to, and it can be difficult for them to develop a good relationship where the student trusts the coach to be able to help them with what they are experiencing.

3. Tell me about a student you worked with who was finding “x” difficult…

The “X” in this equation is, of course, whatever your student is finding challenging. You want to see how they have approached a similar situation and if they were able to help the student find success.

4. How is a coach selected for my son or daughter?

Some services allow you to select a coach from their website, looking through pictures and profiles like a dating app. While this can make you feel in control, it is not a good method for selecting an academic coach. Look for a company who puts thought into how they match the expertise and personality of the coach with the learning style and personality of the student. They should be education experts and able to determine what type of coach will likely compliment and bring out the best in your student.

5.What if we don’t like the coach?

Make sure there is some type of policy that allows you to switch coaches if there becomes an issue. Again, companies who put the work in on the front end do their research to try to keep this from happening in the first place. Of course, from time to time there may be need for change. This should be discussed at the beginning of the arrangement on how, if this were to occur, it would be addressed.

6. How will I know how my son or daughter is doing while in the arrangement?

You should receive regular and detailed updates on the progress of your student. If there is any lack of willingness to share any and all information-be suspicious! Transparency is key when it comes to building a good relationship between the student, coach, and parent. If you want to be truly happy with your decision to hire an academic coach, make sure this is a priority for all parties involved.
