Excitement and Anxiety can often go hand-in-hand. When starting a new adventure such as high school or college, students can easily become overwhelmed with the transition. The habits they have developed that have served them well up to this point may need to change, and that can cause some confusion or frustration.
One way to make them feel more confident is to acknowledge their feelings.
Telling them they are being silly or that they will be fine is just not helpful in this situation. Students feel how they feel and their perception is their reality, no matter how many times you as their parent tell them otherwise. Allow them to express how they are feeling about making this move. Express your understanding of their feelings but be cautious to downplay or make light of them. Even if you are looking at it with the perspective of “been there, done that”, their experience will be different than yours, so be aware of the advice you give or the words you choose.
Allow them to make decisions.
Students often suffer from “choice overload” when they get to high school or college. Decisions such as what classes to take or how to arrange their schedule, have been done for them up to this point. Something as simple as, “when do you want to schedule lunch?” can throw them into a panic. It may be tempting at that point to step in and create the “perfect schedule” for them as you see it. This will not help! In fact, it will be detrimental to their growth. Talk them through some scenarios, but allow them to come to the conclusions. Even if you think they are not the optimal choices, allow them to make the choice, follow through on it, and assess the results at the end. This is part of what they will need to do as they move forward, not only in school, but in life. Giving them control over their choices creates an investment in their success.
Provide the support they need.
If they are feeling nervous or want some extra support, an academic coach is a great resource to put in place as they make the move to high school or college. An experienced educator who can guide them through each stage can put their mind at ease and allow you as a parent to breathe easier as well. Having someone they can go to who is knowledgeable and can help them navigate their new environment can give them all the confidence they need to move forward without so much anxiety. An academic coach functions in much the same manner as an athletic coach- they encourage, motivate, prepare and provide feedback. Aligning your teen with an academic coach or tutor before they even start the school year can be a huge confidence boost for them, and an “insurance policy” of sorts on your end that they will not fall through the cracks.
