Are you considering working with an academic coach this year? Academic coaching has become more popular in the last few years. It takes the ideas and strategies people are familiar with from athletic coaching, and applies them to working on study skills, working towards academic success. Coaches provide instruction, accountability, advice, feedback and motivation. These are important elements for students to make progress in their abilities to become more independent learners.
Here are some things to consider if you are looking to put an arrangement such as this in place for your son or daughter this year:
How to Select an academic coach:
How long have they been teaching?
You are looking for an experienced educator. Kind of a “Goldilocks” if you will. Often, newer teachers are very willing to help, but can lack the experience to really understand how. On the other end, teachers who are too far removed from the classroom are also cause for pause because they may not be in touch with what your student is experiencing and may have trouble with relatability.
What got them into coaching?
Answers will vary, of course, but you want to hear positive things about students and feeling called to work with them or enjoying helping students overcome challenges. Avoid coaches who focus on a negative experience with a past employer or who want to “get out of the traditional teaching environment” because of the bureaucracy.
How many students have they worked with over the years? In what capacities?
True educators will have trouble pinning down a number because they have worked with countless students in many different capacities. Truly, if they have been teaching for 10+ years they would have numbers in the high hundreds to thousands. Coaches who make students their priority will have many examples of students they worked with individually and lots of stories about how they enjoyed working with each one.
What are some things they might do to help a struggling student understand a concept or idea?
Avoid giving too much detail about your son or daughter. You want to sit back and let the coach do the talking so that you can determine if their style is going to fit with what your child responds to. You may be looking for more of a nurturer who can bring out the best through encouragement and lots of positivity. Or, perhaps you want more of a “tough love” approach where accountability and follow-through are the focus. Ideally, you likely want a combination of both, so listen carefully to how they describe their methods and decide if it sounds like a good match.
