IS YOUR STUDENT PREPARED FOR COLLEGE?

The day that you’ve been planning for and worrying about for months is finally here. You’re sending your child off to college. It’s no surprise if this milestone is met with a mix of emotions ranging from excitement to complete and utter panic. You’re suddenly asking yourself if you’ve done enough to prepare them for this life altering transition.  As a parent, it’s only natural to want to do all that you can to ensure that your son or daughter has the best college experience possible and that they’ve been afforded every opportunity to succeed.  The single best gift you could give to your new college student is the opportunity to work with an academic coach.

WHAT IS AN ACADEMIC COACH?

An academic coach inspires students to reach their full potential.

Going away to college is an exciting time for freshmen. For most, it’s the first time they will be on their own and living independently. As a parent you hope you’ve prepared them to rise to the occasion. But it’s not uncommon for some to lack the academic and life skills necessary to thrive in their new environment.

An academic coach inspires students to reach their full potential. Our coaches are passionate, lifelong educators who are skilled at helping students work through emotions and tackle the challenges commonly associated with first-year students.  They’ll work closely with them to develop critical skills such as good study habits, time management, problem solving, goal setting and learning how to adjust to the demands of college life.

3 Critical Roles of a Coach:

Liaison

Coaches can assist students in finding the appropriate campus resources, groups, and activities based on the student’s individual needs.

Cheerleader

A coach provides an encouraging, friendly and non-judgmental environment for the student.  Empowering them to overcome obstacles, while supporting their academic, professional and personal goal development.

Advisor

Coaches facilitate the use of lessons and techniques that motivate students while holding them accountable. Students learn vital skills that propel success and enhance both in-class and web-based learning.

HOW DOES ACADEMIC COACHING WORK?

Academic Coaching offers a comprehensive support solution for freshmen college students, to help keep them on track, in school and pave a path to graduation. Coaching is available for students of all academic abilities, but can be especially helpful if your son or daughter has a history of ADHD, executive functioning disorder, anxiety, or other learning differences.

At Academic Coaching specialists every student starts with a “coachability assessment”, which includes personality and learning style testing. This allows us to match each student with the appropriate coach to optimize the experience for both. Each student’s coaching plan is individualized to maximize the student’s academic, professional and personal success and development. Coaches meet with their student on a weekly basis throughout the semester. Depending on the student’s location, sessions can be in person or online.

Count on an Academic Coach to:

  • Provide 1-on-1 interaction with first-year student.
  • Serve as a resource to your student throughout the year
  • Help with a successful transition to college
  • Encourage engagement in University events and group participation
  • Help your student develop a four-year plan and a pathway to graduation
