ACS is here to help the Bulldogs this semester! Thinking about a tutor or maybe an academic coach?
Let’s compare the benefits of Academic coaching vs. tutoring for University of California-Fresno students:
Tutoring services can help students with a particular subject or challenging concept. On the other hand, academic coaching can cover all areas of academics, including things like time management and study strategies. Academic coaching introduces learning tools and strategies that create effective habits, leading to increased success in the classroom and beyond. These are not mutually exclusive, however, and can be used together to create a strong support system for your student.
Fresno State Bulldogs can have a “personal trainer” for their academic experience!
College can be one of the most challenging and transformational times in a student’s life. Professional athletes have trainers and coaches to help them reach their potential, why shouldn’t a student?
Putting an academic coach in place today can ensure your Fresno State student will have the support needed to get through even the toughest semester.
- Our coaches are experienced educators, not peers
- We earn trust by demonstrating our methods work both in and out of the classroom
- Because of our experience, we don’t just respond to a student’s needs, we anticipate them
How Academic Coaching Works
An experienced educator will meet with the student on a weekly basis. The student will be required to do some outside reading or assignment between each session as assigned by the coach. The student and coach will review each week’s materials. The two then work together on building a relationship that provides mentorship and guidance for the student as they work toward becoming more independent in their learning.
NEARLY 1/3 OF COLLEGE FRESHMEN DROP OUT BEFORE THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR

At Fresno State, we work with high-achieving students, average students and students who need more support. Whatever level your student is at now is the right place to start! Working with an academic coach can address and strengthen areas of concern, while also sharpening their already successful skills.
College Freshmen
Freshmen starting or continuing their first year are our most common clients. Starting from the top, we proactively work with students on what they already know from high school and build on those skills to create an even better college experience. Fresno students who start their freshman year with academic coaching find they are much more prepared and ahead of their peers. They are also less stressed and find they have more free time to enjoy non-academic activities.
Students on Academic Probation
Students who find themselves falling behind or on academic probation at Fresno State can take part in our Academic 911 program. This academic coaching program is designed to address the immediate problems in order to get the student back in good standing. Coaches will identify any individual problems, making any necessary referrals for tutoring or other campus resources as appropriate. Further, students will learn how to avoid potential issues in the future and break any bad habits of the past.
Students Enrolled in Online Learning
Online courses can be a challenge for some students. Providing accountability and a step-by-step plan, our coaches are there each week to assist students taking any online course. Academic Coaching Specialists can help students remain focused and engaged. Tutoring can help with comprehension, but is not always the best option. For these types of courses, the material is not typically or necessarily the problem. Rather, the ability to see things laid out and in order, along with some incremental goals and motivation are usually all that is required to see vast improvements.
