“Don’t trip over what’s behind you”, is a saying we frequently use with our students. We want them to focus on moving forward and looking to the future. So often they can get stuck in a cycle of blame and self-criticizing. Our coaches and tutors will move them toward a growth mindset, where they work to continually improve, noting what they can control and what they cannot.
1. Use a paper planner
Students who utilize a paper planning system are much more likely to find value in doing so, vs. an electronic version. Making time visible and tangible makes it a different thing conceptually and as such, students work with it much differently. Use a paper planner to stay on top of things and plan ahead. This reduces stress and increases confidence levels.
2. Daily Review
To cement information for recall, repetition as close to its input is critical. This means that reviewing notes from class that you had today is super important and will help prevent fogginess and identify gaps in your understanding. Even if you spend just 10 minutes doing this each day, it will significantly help cut down on study time and you will actually learn material, rather than just memorizing it.
3. Make it your own
Making connections and finding relationships within your classwork is extremely important. Particularly in college, where the expectation is that you are putting things together without explicitly being told to do so or how to do so. Create songs, charts, visual aids, notecards, etc. to find ways to make sense of how concepts, people and other things relate. Once you get the “big picture” the details will come more naturally.
4. Confirm comprehension
Make sure you didn’t miss anything. Talk through study guides with classmates , hit key points and take turns giving your understanding of the concepts. This is a great way to confirm what you know and discover what you don’t. Plus an added benefit is that you can help others and maybe even have a little fun!
5. Ask for clarification
For anything you realize you don’t understand, seek clarification right away. Don’t assume it will just go away. You are sure to see it again in some form. Ask the teacher/professor, as classmates, look it up in the text or internet. No matter what do not just let it go!
6. Ask for and use feedback to find ways to improve and grow.
Getting a paper back with red marks all over an make you want to crumple it up and throw it in the trash. Resist the urge! Those corrections are a gift- they are instructing you on what you need to do to improve. Carefully review any feedback and ask for more. Once you have a clear understanding of expectations, assignments, papers and even tests, become much easier to prepare for.
