Teenage students in high school and college have been presented many challenges these past few years. For the most part, they have faired well and learned how to be resilient and flexible. They also picked up some bad habits, such as ignoring deadlines and due dates. With the flexibility needed due to remote and hybrid learning, teachers and professors had little choice about adjusting dates. Most were very accommodating, understanding and lenient on students, accepting things late. This taught students that due dates were just suggestions and with the right excuse there was no need to plan to complete something on time, or sometimes, at all! With an academic coach from ACS, your students will learn to once again, regain proper time management and Turn in Assignments on Time, Every Time in Arlington, TX.

All students experience some classes they do not like or enjoy. There is a sharp distinction, however, between the ones who can figure out how to do well in those classes, and the ones who cannot. With all the ups and downs throughout the year, students can feel like the ride will never end. We refer to this as “The Grade Rollercoaster”. So how do you stop the ride?
Perhaps you are checking grades on the school system every few weeks. Things look pretty good-no red flags or any grade under a “B”. Then comes the week before the end of the quarter. Suddenly there are missing assignments and other homework and tests that were just put in and calculated. How did things go from “looking good” to “they might not pass”?
Teachers did not used to use online systems like these until about 10 years ago and they still have little regulations on when and how grades need to be entered, yet they tell parents and students that they can and should log on at any time to see how they are doing. As pointed out in the example above, often glancing at the scores from time to time does not always give an accurate picture of how the student is really doing in the class. This can feel like you were misled or make the student defensive when confronted about their grades.
“The teacher just doesn’t like me!”, or “I thought I turned that in!”, are common responses.
“I just stink at math/science/history”. These are assumptions or conclusions the student has come to as a result of this “rollercoaster feeling”- or not feeling like they have control over what is coming next.
Academic coaches will walk along with your student every step of the semester. They know what questions to ask and when, empowering the student to take control of their learning and build confidence in their abilities. Going beyond the school’s grading system, they will teach you student to calculate and estimate their own grade, based on returned work and conversations with the teacher/professor. For college students, this can also translate into GPA calculation.
