Academic coaching is similar to tutoring, but it encompasses much more. The coach acts as a mentor who encourages and motivates, teaches skills, techniques, and strategies and gives feedback every step of the way. Here are 6 reasons your child may need coaching:
1. They work hard but do not get results
This is frustrating to put in the work and not get the intended result. Often, a coach can identify small changes that can bring about big improvements.
2. They seem “lazy”
When parents perceive their student as not trying hard, they tend to describe the behavior as “lazy”. While it can be true that the student could put forth more effort in certain situations, often the perceived laziness is actually masked perfectionism. A student who is a closet perfectionist can procrastinate until it is too late because they become paralyzed with thoughts that nothing they do will be good enough. A coach will step in to get things moving, provide encouragement and gently push them through their discomfort to see positive results.
3. They are unorganized
From their room to their backpack and beyond, they are scattered and lack any system of organization. Academic Coaches will help them develop habits that will make even the most unorganized teen into one who can have a place for everything and have (almost) everything in its place!
4. They have trouble with follow-through
You’ve heard the excuses, now start seeing results. Coaches will follow up each week to ensure your student has executed their plan and help them pivot if things went awry. They will begin to understand how to work backwards from deadlines, and why meeting those due dates is important.
5. They cannot manage their time
If they always run out of time on big projects, or simply don’t realize just how much time they spend on non-necessary things, an academic coach is the solution. They will help your child break down assignments into actionable bites they can make progress on each day. Gone will be the days of pleading with them to get homework done or nagging them about approaching due dates. Our coaches handle it all!
6. They have trouble focusing and seem “scatter-brained”
If you’ve ever had a conversation with your teen and they cannot seem to stay on topic no matter how many times you regroup, it can feel frustrating-both for the parent and the child. Academic coaching uses methods to help improve focus and attention span that will help them not only in school, but in everyday life. The ability to pay attention to multi-step directions or put together a sequence are skills that are useful no matter where life takes them.
