Looking for the right tutor for your son or daughter can be overwhelming. There are so many individuals and companies that offer tutoring services, but there is only one who will be the best fit for your teenager. Here are a few tips and 3 steps to finding the perfect tutor in Oxnard, CA when you are ready to make your selection.
1. Don’t just look for the lowest price
Of course the coast matters, but what is most important is the value you are promised. A reputable tutor will present a plan and be willing to augment or adjust it according to your student’s needs. You want to look for a long-term commitment, not just a few sessions. Tutoring takes time to see real results. Look for a suggested length of at least 5-6 weeks minimum. Also, if you wait until there is a test or paper looming, they should be honest in letting you know up front that they many not have enough time to get your student to where they need to be in the time allotted. They should be able/willing to lay out a plan that can get them close, however, or at least help to prioritize the most critical issues now, and move on to secondary ones later.
2. Consider online options
If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that working online can be challenging sometimes. But don’t rule out online tutoring as an option for your student. Consider the convenience and stability of an online scheduled meeting. The student and coach are much more likely to keep their commitment, and with screen share and live interaction using the computer’s camera, it can actually be more focused than if the meeting were physically in person. Also, chances are your son or daughter will be more comfortable working with a tutor in this manner if given the option.
3. Be wary of “guarantees”
If the tutor “guarantees” a good grade, chances are they are not experienced enough to be able to help. A tutor who has been working with students for a length of time understands that they do not have the right to essentially assure you the parent, that the student will put in the work and ultimately produce results that warrant better grades. These things are really out of their hands. What they can (and should) promise is that they will present your student with the tools and support they need to be able to start to comprehend material and gain a better understanding of the course. Over time, this almost always naturally produces good results that materializes as improved grades, but not in all cases. If this occurs, a good tutor will help problem solve, refer out to other resources, and work together with the parent and if necessary, the school, to help the student ultimately be successful.

Sometimes students just need that one person who can motivate them and encourage them like no other.
