1. What worked in the past is not working anymore
Sometimes you come to a realization that what you have been doing is no longer working. For so long you were able to do well just by reading and re-reading material a day or so before a test, memorizing vocabulary and wording, or matching items easily by recognition. There comes a point in every student’s journey when they discover that this strategy does not work in every circumstance. Tendencies can be to blame the teacher or the test itself. Other times you question if you studied “hard enough”, meaning you think you could have spent more time memorizing material. This is when it is crucial that you start to make some changes in the way you study and approach learning in general. Academic coaching can help!
2. Looking to try something different
If what you have been doing is not working, you need to try something new. This sounds so obvious, but we do not always realize this. If you were having trouble with your lawnmower starting, for instance, you might add gas and try to start it again. If is still does not start, would you continue to pour more and more gas into it? Or if your phone charger stopped working, would you continue to try charging your phone with it? Doing the same thing and expecting a different result does not make sense in these cases, nor does it make sense when it comes to your learning. Sometimes what worked in the past stops working or isn’t the right fix for the current problem. It really is as simple as this. Trying a new studying method or test taking technique could be all you need to find success with what has been frustrating you the most.
3. Get inspired and feel more motivated
Let’s face it- there are times when we just procrastinate. This is especially true when we don’t find the task or subject particularly interesting or enjoyable/valuable. It’s human nature, really. Unfortunately, we do not always have the luxury of time and we must find ways to push through and accomplish tasks and projects we do not like just as much as the ones we do. This is a life lesson and skill we need to develop to be successful in school and beyond. We need to get through the hard stuff to get to the reward at the end. Conditioning for this has been occurring your entire life, maybe without you realizing it!
- Eat your dinner before you can have dessert.
- Clean your room before you can go to your friend’s house.
- Save your money so you can buy something better later.
An academic coach will help you keep sight of your goals and give you the “push” you need to get through the less enjoyable assignments to keep you on track.
4. Good-fit Guarantee
Academic Coaching Specialists offers a “Good-fit Guarantee” because we want you to be 100% comfortable in your decision to work with us. If you dedicate 2 sessions to working with an academic coach and you are not happy with the coach or the program, we will either find a better fit coach for you or refund your money completely. We do try to match coaches as closely as possible with your needs and personality, but we recognize there are times when chemistry is just not there. For our model of academic coaching to work, there needs to be a good relationship between you and your coach. No one wants to work with someone they don’t have anything in common with. Our coaches are dedicated and seasoned professionals who are currently teaching in colleges, universities or high schools and are there to walk along side you as you both experience the semester, quarter, or school year. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
5. Start out ahead and stay ahead
When you get behind it is so much harder to catch up. The further you fall behind the truer this statement is. If you are like so many other students who have experienced learning during the pandemic, you can become overwhelmed by the number of assignments (big and small), their locations, due dates and multiple other requirements for multiple classes. These add up so quickly and you can easily become disoriented and go from feeling like you “got this” to feeling like you are drowning. Academic Coaching Specialists will introduce you to an easy-to-follow planning system that will ensure you do not get behind or miss anymore deadlines or due dates. You will develop the time management skills to stay on top of your assignments and even get ahead, all with the ability to be flexible and still have plenty of time for fun!
